Class Description

In Language Arts, students will learn more about sentences (kinds of sentences,
how to correct fragments and run-ons, variations, and compounds) and how they form
comprehensive paragraphs. Students will also learn more about parts of speech
and how they increase their writing capabilities. We will write formal
communications such as friendly and persuasive business letters, personal
narratives, expository essays, and functional directions. Emphasis will be placed on the Writing
Process, the Six Traits of Good Writing, and Spelling.

Homework Policy
Students must turn in completed assignments on time. Missing assignments earn a zero in the grade book. If the student has been absent, he or she
must make up any assignments or tests missed in a timely manner.

Classroom Procedures
Students are greeted at the door by the teacher. Students quietly navigate to
their assigned seat and start the mindset (mini-assignment) listed on the
board. The teacher takes roll, collects homework, and then discusses the lesson
on the board with the students. After this, the teacher starts the lesson for
the day's objective.

Special Announcements
Students will be creating a “Writing
Tips” folder throughout the year, which they will use to improve their writing
projects. The folder will include a
checklist of requirements for the writing assignments as well as lists of vivid
verbs and adjectives and words that can be used in place of “boring”
words. The folder will be kept in the
classroom, but will be sent home with students at the end of the year.
**Please Note: Writing assignments will be done, for the most part, in class. This allows the teacher to carefully guide the students through the complete writing process, emphasizing key elements that lead to successful communication.
