PTO meeting minutes 08/24/06
The meeting opened with attendance and
selling tickets for the 50/50 drawing.
In addition to several TMMS teachers and
staff, there were 46 parents in attendance at the meeting.
PTO President Margaret Schmidt introduced
herself and the board and each board member addressed the crowd,
telling a little about themselves and their students at the
school.
The members of the 2006-2007 PTO board are
as follows:
President: Margaret Schmidt
Vice-President: Gwen Jolly
Treasurers: Beverly Riley & Heather
Gregorie
Secretaries: Samantha Starr & Shannon
Williams
Margaret brought up ideas for possible
fund-raisers including a gift basket auction, the holiday shop,
and cookouts. She asked for suggestions from the PTO
members and one suggested gift cards for an online catalog of
merchandise. She will get us the info on that. No
other suggestions offered.
Margaret brought up potential topics for
meeting during the year including, internet safety, sex, college,
drugs, and character counts. She asked if there were any
other topics or concerns that the parents were interested in.
One member brought up possibly teaching self defense moves to the
students. Officer Maroney addressed that topic, expressing
concerns that the students would spend too much time using those
moves on one another. He also addressed some My-Space
concerns along with Dr. Sgro.
Dr. Sgro addressed the members, discussing
importance of attendance at PTO meetings and how meaningful and
helpful the info has been at these meetings. He also talked
about how much the student change at this age, citing the
differences in size between the 6th and 8th
grades. He talked about free college opportunities for the
students at CAC and how the parents must get the students to work
hard now, they cant fool around now and try to pull it
together later. He introduced the deans for each grade and
they took a moment to address the PTO members.
Some of the field trips for the year were
discussed including the trip to San Diego, La Brea Tar Pits, and
Washington DC. Dr. Sgro also talked about the tax credit
and how with the help of family, friends, and neighbors, students
could go on these trips for free. He also brought up the
NJHS trip to Disneyland and how there is no cost to the students
after fund-raising and community service hours, the students are
even given $20.00 spending money.
The meeting closed with the 50/50 drawing.
A total of $66.50 in tickets were sold giving $33.25 to the TMMS
PTO and $33.23 to the winner. The winning ticket number
belonged to Mary Newman and she donated her winnings back to the
PTO. Thanks Mary!
Our next meeting will be Thursday September
21st at 6:30 pm and our topic for the meeting will be
